The Belle Rive’s stunning cream and blue French colonial facade stops people cold and makes them instantly whip out their camera.
This hotel is spread over three buildings along the Mekong River road and in this case, you can judge a book by its cover because the interior is just as elegant as the exterior. Rooms are classy, with a mix of modern and colonial style using wicker and wood furniture, polished hardwood floors, painted porcelain sinks and all the modern trimmings that you would expect at this price tag including minibar, writing desk, air-con, WiFi and sitting area. Interesting quirks include separate rooms for shower and toilet, which is clearly a result of the original architecture and design. It’s a grand choice and the hotel also has a riverside terrace, an ideal spot for a sundowner. The only drawback is that at this price, you would expect a swimming pool and perhaps a spa but alas, it’s the choice you have to make between location and amenities. And even though it is the least expensive category, we are particularly fond of the superior rooms featuring loft bedrooms and separate lounge area.

After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
