Great midrange value
Villa Somphong hits a sweet spot for those travellers happy to pay a little more for a stylish room but not willing to move into top-range prices.
Flashpackers will delight in both the location and the above average rooms. Located in two buildings on the Nam Khan at the far end of the peninsula, Villa Somphong has small rooms with polished wood floors, flat screen TVs, neatly painted walls, beds with good linen, tiny table and chair, air-con and extremely bright bathrooms. It’s a very comfortable place where you can relax in your room, watch a bit of TV and surf the free WiFi without feeling the slightest bit worried about cleanliness or noise. They’ve even made an effort with the exterior: it’s freshly painted white and pale yellow and adorned with cheerful wood stained shutters, picket fence and a protective barrier of pretty potted plants.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
