Excellent mid-range choice
Villa Merry III, also known as Villa Merry Lao and Villa Merry Lao-Swiss, is popular because it’s a solid, clean and pleasant place located right in the thick of the action between the Aussie Sports Bar and Redbul Bar.
You can tell from the welcoming, neat and tidy lobby that the rooms will be respectable and indeed they are. Air-con, free in-room WiFi and flat screen TVs are included, and the comfy rooms have enough wooden furniture to furnish a large house. The bathroom is a small step up from that of your average guesthouse in town, as are the beds though the mattresses are still rock hard. Prices represent good value for the quality on offer. A welcome bonus: the affable owner Mr Sam, who studied in Germany for seven years, speaks excellent German and English and is very helpful. A basic breakfast is included. Highly recommended.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
