Cheap, bare rooms
Thony 1 is a bit out of town on a laneway just before the motorbike bridge over the Nam Khan.
If you have a problem with a 10-minute walk to get into town, this isn’t for you. Located in a cluster of budget guesthouses that includes Villa Merry 1, Thony 1 is a family-run joint that provides good backpacker value with the air-con rooms being some of the cheapest in town. Cheap in this case doesn’t mean nasty, but it does mean minimalist and bare. You can look forward to a bed, tile floor and if you’re lucky, a TV. The ensuite hot water bathrooms are large and clean. The family running the place is pleasant enough. This is a good cheap option if you don’t mind the walk into town.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you'll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
