Professionally run, basic rooms
Set outside the tourist zone a few doors from Sabaidee Guesthouse, Malida occupies a cute white house with a green tiled roof.
There isn’t much in terms of furniture or style, but the 15 rooms are spotlessly clean. Rooms come with air-con and some with a TV, but they do feel quite budget and small. That said, a budget room for higher than budget price is the norm in Luang Prabang. There are two shared balconies, one overlooking the sleepy street out front, and another in the back. Service is professional and rooms are cleaned daily, and you can opt for a breakfast of baguettes and eggs, best enjoyed in the garden. They also have a pleasant front porch with tables and chair to have a drink and enjoy the afternoon sun. It’s a good location which is quiet in the daytime and an easy 10-minute walk to the backpacker bar area or the night market. Only a picky backpacker would find fault in this place.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
