Unobstructed river view
Nicksa’s Place is a standout from all the other bungalows along the river’s edge in Muang Ngoi.
By the village standards, the property has a generously sized piece of riverfront and that means the bungalows boast a wide open, unobstructed panoramic view of the Nam Ou and the peaceful mountains. In fact, when compared to other accommodation, it offers one of the best views, second only to pricey Ning Ning Guesthouse.
The back of house is a ramshackle mess of random junk but luckily this mess doesn’t interfere with the bungalows, of which there are a few different kinds to choose from. The cheapest are basic and weathered buildings, more like a shack with bamboo thatch walls, metal roof and attached concrete bathroom block equipped with an electric heated shower and bucket flush toilets. These simple bungalows are clearly older but still have glass windows, mosquito net, fan and front porch that have a hammock, table and chair. A roll of toilet paper and towel are provided.
For a few more dollars, the newer wooden bungalows are of a sturdier construction, more spacious and slightly brighter in feel. The concrete and tile bathroom is also bigger—no showering over the toilet—and it has a regular flush toilet, a hot shower and cold bucket shower. There’s a version of this room with two double beds, suitable for three or four people. Of course, these bungalows also have the coveted porch, hammock plus river view combo, framed by a garden row of lush tropical foliage. It’s one of Muang Ngoi’s best budget bungalows and a good deal in the low season.
Nicksa’s Place has an attached restaurant terrace, another spot to lounge, meet fellow travellers and use the WiFi. The family speaks some English. It is at the far end of the main street and therefore one of the furthest accommodation from the boat landing—don’t let that turn you off as it’s a mere 250 metres away. From the top of the boat landing stairs, turn right and walk on the main street 250 metres.
