Mandala Ou is one of the top places to stay in Nong Kiaow—though not luxurious, the resort boasts comfortable bungalows, a herbal sauna, swimming pool and an amazing view of the river and karst.

Located one kilometre from the centre of Nong Kiaow, a flat 15-minute walk, the hotel’s somewhat isolated location means a quiet, serene riverside environment without traffic or local noises. Though the entrance is on the main road, the property does have a retreat feel and in fact, it does regularly host yoga retreats and has a large practice sala overlooking the water, giving it all a slight health-and-wellness vibe. If there was any doubt, the herbal sauna is fired up every evening, a tonic to Nong Kiaow’s chilly winter months.

Mandala Ou has ten bungalows: four set in the back and six in the front with direct river views—the latter are the ones to stay in. The four garden bungalows have an upstairs loft to hang out in but this pales in comparison to being able to wake up and step out onto your balcony to gaze at the mist lifting over the karst. There’s one impressive giant fang in particular that looms across the water.

In contrast to Nong Kiau Riverside’s wooden bungalows, here rooms are concrete structures. The interiors are painted a cheery soft yellow and well equipped. There’s a tea/coffee making kit, an ensuite bathroom with electric heated shower system and WiFi.

There’s no air-con, and the daytime temperatures can be scorching in Nong Kiaow. However, there is a plunge pool and sun loungers and rooms are equipped with ceramic heaters, perhaps even more valuable to guests in winter months. One drawback is that the lodgings are all clustered together and unlike Nong Kiau Riverside, people can walk in front of your bungalow—it’s not an entirely private experience.

The indoor/outdoor restaurant is one of the best places to eat in town—well prepared delicious Lao and Western fare and very reasonably priced. The room rate includes breakfast. For variety, you’ll have to walk or cycle the kilometre into town (bicycles are provided). Just be prepared for the fact that the road is not lit at night.

Mandala Ou is not what would be considered a luxury property, however, it’s one of Nong Kiaow’s best for now. That means it is booked solid in high season from November to March, often with tour groups. For stays during this period book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Note that there is sometimes an annual closure in low season.
