Muang La Resort is chic, refined and expensive.

Photo of Muang La Resort
This French-owned luxury lodge is set on the Nam Pak River and it is undeniably beautiful. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens – and high walls to keep the riff-raff out – it boasts 10 rooms spread over five villas that feature polished wood, granite, Asiatique decor, a ridiculously comfortable bed and an ensuite bathroom with tub or shower.

Muang La Resort is the only luxury property north of Luang Prabang, and we’ll give kudos to the achievement considering its remote location. But we found the pretentious attitude we encountered in correspondence and on several occasions in person to be off-putting and out of place for such a down to earth town. Outsiders are not allowed past the front gate to pick up a brochure or to talk to staff about making a reservation. You don’t even encounter this level of snobbery and ultra-exclusivity in the $1,000 per night five-star joints in Luang Prabang.

There’s a two-night minimum stay and the room rate includes breakfast and set dinner at their elegant restaurant overlooking the river. Services and amenities available include massage, sauna, a suspension bridge across to a small island in the middle of the river where there is a private viewing tower/lounge. Guests can book a range of interesting private tours, motorbike tours and treks to ethnic villages with professional English- or French-speaking guides. A swimming pool is also under construction. As if all that wasn’t enough, every afternoon they pump up and clean water from the hot spring into two tubs for guests.

Hotel Lhakham is located right beside Muang La Resort, on the same river with the same vista, but at a budget price and with our kind of charm. Thankfully the hot spring – the very same that Muang La Resort draws its water from -- is open to the public and is free. It goes without saying that if money is not an issue, then Muang La Resort is for you.
