The small but well appointed rooms of BK Guesthouse, paired with warm hospitality, make this place excellent value.
Set amid a lovely garden of flowers, the rooms come with either fan or air-con, and the air-con is a real blessing on days when Paksan heats up.
The rattan furniture, which includes a desk and clothes rack, are handy touches. Beds are topped with Southeast Asia-firm mattresses and clean sheets, and the windows have security bars. The hot water bathrooms are a squeeze, a minor nuisance to overlook since it’s clean and has good water pressure. WiFi is available in the common area.
Overall, everything is well maintained. The cat-loving owner speaks good English and is exceptionally kind and friendly. The fact that they haven’t raised their prices a single kip over the years proves this is the best budget joint in town and top choice for backpackers who happen to find themselves needing an overnight in Paksan. Despite there being so few travellers in Paksan, BK Guesthouse can sell out as they only have a seven rooms. Book or call ahead.
Paksan is not tourism-centric and like other accommodation in town, BK doesn’t have bicycle or motorbike rental and you’ll have to walk everywhere. There’s also very limited food options in the immediate area. To find BK, it’s the first road east of the bridge, leading south off of Route 13 to the Mekong—at the top of the road is the Lao Telecom building and post office. It’s a kilometre from the bus station, a tuk tuk will cost at most 20,000 kip. If on a bus passing through Paksan, remember you can ask them to stop east of the bridge shaving off a few hundred metres walk to the guesthouse.
