Get away from it all
If Champasak isn’t remote enough for you, simply head to Don Daeng island in the middle of the Mekong, where you'll find La Folie Lodge delivering a luxurious experience on a bucolic island.
Located on the northwestern side of the island facing across the river from Champasak town, La Folie Lodge is a getaway from it all. Once guests transfer across by boat, they can look forward to a lodge in style and feel.
Predictably there is a central airy pavilion serving as the restaurant and gathering place with a terrace, bar and lounge tastefully decorated with books, French posters and blue and white Chinoiserie ceramics. Solid wood bungalows line the river banks and in contrast to The River Resort’s contemporary accommodation, the raised buildings are traditional and floor to ceiling wood: wooden floor boards, panelling and furniture.
Bungalows (superior rooms) are cosy, warmly lit and decorated with framed photos, handwoven bed runners and bamboo accessories. There are the standard amenities (air-con) and extra luxuries (king size bed, quality natural toiletries, ice bucket) to look forward to. The best part is the balcony overlooking the Mekong, the view available in all except the two standard category rooms. And unlike Champasak, rooms face west so guests see sunset over the mountains.
Aside from a day trip to Wat Phu, strolling through the village or cycling the island’s many pastoral pathways and paddies, there’s not a whole lot to do except relax, swim or read on the bungalow balcony. You’ll likely find the resort empty during the day as tour groups are out on an excursion to the temple. If you bore easily, this isn’t the place for you. All this luxury comes at a price—boat transfers and breakfast are included, while other meals and drink command Western prices.

After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
