At Mama Piang backpackers can choose from basic wooden riverside bungalows or rooms in a solid building across the road.
Both kinds of accommodation are served up with hospitality from mama herself. She’s friendly to the point where it’s charmingly whacky. This kind of enthusiasm for guests and friendliness is refreshing on Don Dhet, a place where so many business owners seems indifferent or downright sullen.
Tread lightly up the rickety stairs to the wooden bungalows that are equipped with the bare basics: bed, mosquito net and fan. The bricks and mortar room are equally basic and clean, with a mosquito net and large bathroom, western toilet and cold water shower. Hammocks are strung across the front and upstairs porch. The riverfront restaurant means there are even more places to relax. This is good value, especially since it comes with smiles.
Mama Piang’s is a kilometre from the main boat landing in “Ban Hua Det”. The easier way to get here is to pay 5,000 kip extra to have the boat take you to the secondary pier at Ban Don Dhet 1.5 km down the eastern coast. From there walk north about 180 m.
