The Last Resort is physically no longer the last resort—its neighbour Easy Go Backpackers is further south—it still feels remote given the 1.5 km hike from the boat landing to this spot on the quieter sunset side of the island.

Some will love the hippie-ish ultra-laidback earthy vibe and the unique accommodation: grass thatch teepee. For others, this would literally be their last resort as a place to stay. Lodge here only if you are firmly in the former.

The teepees have bamboo doors, a concrete floor, mat and a fan. It’s suitable for two people. There’s a communal area for lounging, reading and chewing the fat with your fellow teepee dwellers, not for surfing the internet—not surprising, there’s no WiFi. Dry season, which also coincides with high season (if you get our smokey drift) is when this place comes to life as low water levels creates a Mekong beach and there’s bumper crop of backpackers on the island for beach barbecues, bonfires and open-air cinema projected onto a screen. The lively scene ironically dries up with the rainy season.

Like many of the cheaper accommodation on the island, the teepees aren’t the most secure and it’s something to consider if you have valuables or are a solo female traveller. If the teepee just isn’t for you, it’s always an option to stay elsewhere and come for the events. Check their Facebook as they post about parties, barbecues and movie nights.
