Mekong river, 300m north of boat landing T: (020) 2244 6449, (030) 956 6634
Kong View is a lovely little guesthouse with a sweet grandma at the helm. Look past the modern facade and oddly empty, soulless ground floor reception because the upstairs rooms are small, tidy and extremely well lit due to the natural light pouring in from the large windows.
Each room also has a vanity, hot water bathroom with Western toilet and we noticed clean linens and a bedside plug and light. Overall Kong’s has a newer feel than many others in town. Flashpackers should be satisfied as there is WiFi and air-con is an option. Rooms facing the street have direct access to a shared balcony.
The outstanding part is the upstairs balcony/restaurant with a great view of the Mekong, the ideal spot to write a few postcards and watch fishermen glide by. Equally important is the guesthouse’s fleet of bicycles. They are cheap cruisers, good enough to get you roaming around the island.
Kong View is 300 metres north of the boat landing, past Pon Arena. It is the furthest in the row of accommodation that line the river, and as such, it isn’t as popular as the accommodation directly in front of the boat landing. Backpackers in search of something above basic and still fresh will find Kong View worth the amble. No English spoken.
