Days can be steamy hot on Don Khong and Mekong Inn’s deep swimming pool is an enticing feature, one that may convince a backpacker to stretch their budget.

The pool is not the only highlight. The inn is on the Mekong river and there are fantastic views from rooms on the upper level. Owned by a Canadian-Lao who has returned to Laos to retire, Mekong Inn is her retirement project and winter home.

Slightly retro but well appointed.

There are two sturdy buildings, one close to the river and one set back behind the swimming pool. The riverfront building is, not surprisingly, the more popular of the two. It has a terrific view from the communal balcony, which is furnished with tables and chairs. Rooms are a bit retro and the air-con units are lumbering old beasts, but overall they are well appointed, clean and functioning. Guests will find themselves comfortable with the quality wooden furniture (bedside table, vanity, clothes rack), no nonsense tile floors, mini-fridge and wall lamps.

Rooms in the other building have more of a heritage feel, some with royal blue carpeting, white cotton linens and dark wood furniture. The fan rooms are far simpler affairs on the ground floor, less frills and only one window. The hotel has enough rooms that you could easily check out a few rooms upon arrival to decide which you prefer.

Mmmmm pancakes.

Breakfast is included in the room rate, and we certainly enjoyed the stack of fluffy Canadian style pancakes with palm syrup, a Don Khong speciality. Their restaurant, which is where guests connect to WiFi, is also a good option for lunch and dinner.

Mekong Inn is located 600 metres south of the boat landing. This is a good choice for travellers with a less stringent budget.
