A single motel-style building sits alone on a patch of grassy lawn, almost right in the thick of the rice paddies on the karst side of the road—it’s feels as if you could reach out and touch those incredible rock walls.

On the plus side, you get that view and feeling. On the downside, the building is rather isolated and there’s no place to hang out and actually enjoy the view. Unlike most guesthouses, where there is an attached family house and restaurant, in this case it is diagonally across the road.

If this detail doesn’t bother you, then you can look forward to rooms that are bright white boxes with stark walls, tile floors and beds with white linens. Both front and back windows have wooden shutters and bug screens but no security bars. The bathroom also looks clean and new and comes with a hot water shower and western toilet.

Khounmee Guesthouse is a clean, quiet place to lay your head for a night, not designed for hanging out for days.
