Great value, top budget pick
It was all smiles when we visited Dokboua Guesthouse.
Centrally located, Dokboua is run by a lovely, friendly family keen on ensuring budget travellers have a comfortable stay and it’s no wonder they have remained popular for many years. This feeling is refreshing in Vang Vieng, as many locals have become so jaded by the tourist masses. The concrete guesthouse has three levels of rooms. The cheapest fan rooms on the ground floor are simply furnished, are a bit dark and gloomy but clean and fine for a night’s rest. More appealing and costing only a little bit more are the rooms on the higher levels with full length windows that open on to the shared balcony. Bright and airy, they also have distant views of the mountains that make Vang Vieng so popular. All rooms have clean attached bathrooms with Western toilets and hot showers. Prices here are some of the cheapest in town for a private room and rooms at Dokboua are far superior to Nana Guesthouse or Pan’s Place.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
