Quiet guesthouse, excellent value
Another top flashpacker pick, Pany is a two-storey block guesthouse set back less than 100 metres off the main road near the old runway.
Rooms are sparkling clean, as are the large attached hot water bathrooms, and tall folks will appreciate the lofty ceilings. Everything feels bright and new and the rooms are solid with big spring beds, desk/vanity, air-con, minifridge, flatscreen TV, cool tile floor and large windows you can slide open for fresh air. This place represents good value considering a simple breakfast is included and there is WiFi in the rooms on each floor (Vilayvong Guesthouse does not provide either). And always a pleasant bonus: the family who run this place are friendly folks. This guesthouse is not as busy as it should be probably due to the fact that its hidden behind other hotels, but it’s not difficult to find at all: just south of Pan’s Place on the main road, follow the sign down the narrow laneway.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
