Domon is among the breed of big multi-level concrete guesthouses that have popped up along the riverbank.
It’s great value and a top guesthouse in Vang Vieng, especially if you shell out some extra kip for a room with a view.
Domon’s best rooms have private balconies with unobstructed view of the mountains for under US$20. All rooms, even the cheapies, are spotlessly clean, freshly painted, bright and spacious with relatively comfy beds, private balconies, satellite TV and attached bathrooms with hot showers. Staff sell bus tickets and can exchange money, plus free WiFi is the icing on the cake but if you absolutely must have WiFi in your room, choose the rooms on the road side. A bonus is that now that there’s no party on the island across the river, the river side rooms are as peaceful as they should be.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
