In a cream building not far from the riverfront, the dated Phoungchampa Hotel (formerly Intha Hotel) is an okay guesthouse for those in need of air-con and a private bathroom.
The rooms are spacious and have springy beds, a TV, vanity, WiFi and clean ensuite bathrooms with hot shower. Big windows let in lots of light and the wraparound balconies would be a great spot for watching city life below if they had any seating. The detail that brings the room down is the old carpeted floors –- even a deep cleaning could not resurrect them -– and it makes the room feel more drab than it actually is. If you can overlook what’s underfoot, then it’s not a bad place. Rates aren’t the lowest around and if you’re looking for a more modern and updated guesthouse in the same price range, try Mixay Paradise, Phonepaseuth or Souphaphone Guesthouse.

Cindy Fan is a Canadian writer/photographer and author of So Many Miles, a website that chronicles the love of adventure, food and culture. After falling in love with sticky rice and Mekong sunsets, in 2011 she uprooted her life in Toronto to live la vida Laos. She’s travelled to over 40 countries and harbours a deep affection for Africa and Southeast Asia. In between jaunts around the world, she calls Laos and Vietnam home where you’ll find her traipsing through rice paddies, standing beside broken-down buses and in villages laughing with the locals.
