In terms of cleanliness, there is much to be desired but backpackers looking for a social, energetic atmosphere flock here. Funky Monkey’s popularity is undeniable as the lobby and footpath in front are always buzzing. The dorms are a carbon copy of nearby competitor Vientiane Backpackers, with army barrack bunk beds, each with individual bed lights and lockers underneath, except here it is maxed at 16 beds. There’s no air-con and with two dorms and one toilet/shower room per floor, expect a queue to use the facilities, though judging by the smell of feet and sweat, showering isn’t a priority. Every surface of the hostel looks like it could do with a thorough sandblasting and a few coats of space-grade paint to deal with the amount of traffic it experiences.

Free WiFi is available throughout and basic breakfast is provided in the morning. There’s a good communal area downstairs and pool table for those looking to meet new people. A cheap and lively option for the very budget conscious.
