In a city full of grimy budget places to stay that lack care or any sense of professionalism, Mixay’s bright and clean no-nonsense rooms are refreshing.
Upon entering the reception you will be inundated by signs about the rules – but the rules translate into an exceptionally clean and orderly experience. The rooms with shared bathrooms are a decent size, with a fan, window and furniture. They are also extremely clean and bright, as are the blindingly white tiled shared bathrooms that get cleaned regularly. Each floor has a communal terrace with seating, perfect for evening chats, and the views are fabulous on the upper floors. Rooms with private bathrooms are very small and just fit the bed and perhaps your luggage, but are similarly clean and bright, have air-con and represent some of the best value in town. In fact, it’s these rooms we would recommend first and you won’t regret paying a little more for the air-con when Vientiane temperatures soar.
For 30,000 kip more you can have breakfast included -- a great deal if you are two. You can help yourself to tea or instant coffee in the lobby at anytime. The free WiFi in the rooms was atrocious during our stay but fast in the lobby and we imagine it has probably stayed that way since. Still, this is Vientiane’s top budget spot.
