Hotel Khamvongsa is one of the best hotels in Vientiane – not because it’s flashy or glamorous, but because it is a family-owned hotel that offers life’s little luxuries in an understated and elegant way, all at an affordable midrange price.

Fin de siècle feeling

Step inside the lobby and feel transported away from busy modern day Vientiane. The lobby, which doubles as a bar and dining room, is utterly charming. Black and white checkerboard floors and ebony furniture speak to a bygone era, as do the monochrome photos that share the walls with bold and colourful oil paintings and framed textiles. The reception flows into a small inner courtyard sporting terracotta tiles, wicker patio chairs and a wall dripping in leafy vines.

Inner courtyard to go with your morning coffee and flaky croissant.

You can expect the same loveliness in the inviting, spacious and comfortable rooms. Wide, dark wood floorboards feel solid underneath road-weary feet. Sunlight gently filters through lace curtains brightening the already bright white walls. A teak desk beckons you to sit and pen the next great novel (or perhaps just the next blog post). Beds are the most comfortable we have ever slept on in this town – they’ve added a mattress topper, transforming hard Southeast Asian beds to those suitable for western backs and backsides.

Simple bed for the single room, but simply the best bed ever.

The 26 rooms vary in size and configuration but you can expect a wardrobe with full-length mirror, sitting area, TV, fridge, in-room safe, ceiling fan and air-con. The bathrooms have modern fixtures, a hot water shower with good water pressure and posh shower gel. There is no built in lighting and they’ve made up for it with plenty of lamps, including one on the bedside table. WiFi in the room is lightning fast by Vientiane standards. And everything, top to bottom, is spectacularly clean and well maintained. How clean? We returned to the room to find housekeeping in progress with three staff on their hands and knees polishing the legs of all the furniture. Yes, it’s that clean.

Lovely.

A scrumptious breakfast fit for royalty is included in the room rate, your choice between several kinds of Western or Asian sets. You can tell how much love and care has been put into Hotel Khamvongsa, which was named after the owner’s mother who started it as a guesthouse that lasted for 10 years. It was rebuilt and reopened as a hotel in 2009.

The staff are polite, professional, sweet and friendly, a rare combination for a Vientiane hotel in this price range. We love a hotel with a story and some roots and it’s clear others do too: this place is extremely popular. Advanced booking is recommended.

A haven through these doors.

Hotel Khamvongsa is located at the western edge of the city centre on Khounboulom Road, across from Wat Inpeng and a block north of the Mekong riverside.
