Great location, simple clean rooms
Sometimes all you want is a great location, simple clean room, private bathroom and good price. Although 906 Riverside lacks the character and appeal of similarly priced guesthouses, rooms tick all the boxes including hot-water ensuites rarely available in many budget digs.
Sandwiched between the Melaka River and historic Kampung Hulu Mosque, 906 Riverside’s large but uninspiring exterior is easy to find and less than 10 minutes' walk to most sights. The somewhat bland modern tiled lobby runs from the road to the river, spruced up with a delightful and interesting collection of antique Peranakan furniture and knick-knacks, roped off and labelled like a small private museum.
Unfortunately the charm doesn’t extend to the simple rooms, although they offer all the comforts you need. Air-con interiors are spacious—more than twice the size of many others we viewed in Melaka—and are bright and airy with either river or mosque views. Be warned that some rooms have no windows at all (we didn’t view these)—request a river view to watch the passing parade. Rooms on both sides are noisy, with either the call to prayer or the musical fountain, which plays nightly across the river, within earshot. Junior suite and family rooms add furnished balconies. Family rooms are set up like a small apartment with two separate bedrooms and living room off a hallway although bedrooms have no external windows. Unless you get a great online deal, better value family rooms are available elsewhere.
The simple spaces are outfitted with golden coloured faux-wood floors and neutral painted walls. Beds are firm and comfy and furnishings include a desk and bedside table. Lighting and power outlets are adequate and a decent sized TV and small safe are included. Tea makings are supplied, but you’ll have to venture into the hallway for hot or cold water from the dispenser. Ensuite bathrooms are large and spotless, with hot-water showers and a small sink but no bench space.
The hotel has a lift, but is not suitable for less mobile folk as you still have to climb a set of stairs to access it. A buffet breakfast is included in the quoted rates, but better online deals are available without breakfast (we paid 78 ringgit) and plenty of good eating options are close by. Staff are friendly but don’t have a great deal of local knowledge. For folks with cars, make use of the limited parking spots and hire one of the hotel's bikes to explore.
906 Riverside’s location is a winner and rooms are fine, but if you’re looking to meet and mingle with other travellers, you’d be better off in a nearby guesthouse, though you’ll most likely have to share a bathroom. Alternatively if you don’t mind being on the edge of town, Hotel Arissa is great value with clean and modern rooms and Hotel Hong near the mosque has simple and clean budget rooms plus a rooftop terrace.
