Olive Flashpacker

Olive Flashpacker

Simple and stylish dorms

More on Melaka

On the edge of Melaka’s Little India, spotless and simple but smartly styled Olive Flashpacker offers a comfortable sleep. Choose between a spacious eight- or 12-bed mixed air-con dorm or if you have a group of friends in tow, a not-so-spacious quad double-bunk room.

Travelfish says:

Rooms are windowless, and painted in a calming blue-grey, perfect for a decent bit of shut-eye. Beds sport navy-coloured fitted sheets, with contrasting top sheet, doona and towel included. The standard 12-bed dorm provides a choice of an Ikea-style loft bed with a workspace and a bright yellow pop of beanbag beneath or a quality spring mattress directly on the carpeted floor—there’s a bit of a kindy-nap-time ambience with little privacy, yet no annoying bunkbed squeak. You can make yourself a cup of tea in the room, however there’s no access to the communal area.

The premium eight-bed dorm offers just mattresses on the floor separated by lockers for a little privacy along with access to the communal “premium” lounge with beanbags and TV and free use of the laundry and basic kitchen facilities (a kettle, and sink, but no stove). Personal lockers in both styles of dorm are spacious enough to store valuables and small bags, but not for big backpacks. Power sockets are plentiful in the premium dorms, but you’ll have to fight for your turn in the standard dorm.

Quad rooms offer access to the premium facilities. Hot-water rain-showers in the super clean share bathrooms are a bit of a bonus for a hostel. Staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful, but they are only on duty until 21:00 and leave a phone contact for overnight emergencies.

If you’re in Melaka for a quick overnight stay the standard dorm will suffice, but if you plan on a few days, it’s worth upgrading to the premium dorm. Olive Flashpacker is a decent 15- to 20-minute walk to the sights, but close to some excellent local food options.

The hostel is easy to miss, hidden away with no street signage bar a small stand at the entrance, where a steep staircase leads up to above the shops on Jalan Munshi Abdullah. Look between Samsung and Great Wall Children’s Centre just down from Hotel Hallmark Inn. If you’d prefer to be closer to the action, excellent, put pricier dorm beds are on offer at NoMaps or for the more budget conscious, try Ringo’s Foyer Guesthouse or 45 Jebat (see their FB page.
