More on Langkawi

Cradled between the foothills of Langkawi’s 550-million-year-old Gunung Mat Cincang and the theme park setting of the Oriental Village, Geopark Hotel offers a rather special blend of diverse entertainment. With just 30 rooms and reasonable prices, Geopark Hotel is an attractive flashpacker option, especially for those with kids in tow.

With dark wood furnishings against deep yellow walls and colonial-style doors and windows overlooking a brick paved street, you could almost imagine yourself in a small European village. The tiled lobby doubles as a cosy common area with plenty of light, a flatscreen TV, WiFi and a colourful aquarium. While the hotel grounds can be a bit busy, the area from the lobby to the rooms remains relatively quiet. It’s also wheelchair friendly with entry ramps and a decently sized elevator. A second-floor open-air lounge and seating area offers another space to relax.

Room have either a view of the Disneyland-esque Oriental Village (home to the cable car) or a panoramic view of Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park. Rooms are simple but roomy and spotless, with large beds, a desk, WiFi, TV, electric teakettle and mini-fridge. There are three family-size suites with extra beds or mattresses available upon request. An added bonus is the spacious pool as sparkling clean as the hotel.

Nice view of the village grounds.

Plenty to do lies just outside your door. You are front and centre for the cable car plus ATV riding, the 6D Cinemotion theatre and futuristic-looking Skydome. Plenty of kitschy souvenir shops offer a chance to browse, while you can choose from a few restaurants.

If this isn’t enough to keep you entertained, escape through the back entrance of the Oriental Village and be within walking distance of nearby Telaga Tujuh or Seven Wells waterfall, the centrepiece of Geoforest Park. Its upper seven pools and surrounding forest are great for communing with nature or an impromptu picnic. For more restaurants, Telaga Harbour is reasonably close by. For further island exploration, grab a taxi at the entrance to Oriental Village or the hotel can call for a direct pick up.
