Mountain views from bed

More on Kinabalu Park

If laying in bed and staring at the magnificent Mt Kinabalu is your desire, Puncak Borneo Resort offers the best seats in the house.

Travelfish says:

The imposing white-framed building climbs the hill on a corner of the main road about two kilometres west of Kinabalu Park entrance. By climbs, we mean there is a multitude of stairs, so if you’re heading here after conquering the peak, you may want to consider this, but for pre-climbing, it’ll be great training.

If you can secure a mountain view room, it’ll cost you an extra 10 ringgit, and may be a little noisier than other rooms, as though they face the mountain, they also face the road. Quieter rooms are back or side facing, and almost all have great views too, just not of the mountain. Rooms are simple, clean and smart, with modern yet slightly cheap looking furniture. Fuchsia curtains add zing to the neutral tones of dark wood floors and white walls. Quality beds will have you well rested with duvets to keep you warm on chilly nights. Facilities include tea-making equipment, telephone and flatscreen TV. Tiled shiny bathrooms provide hot showers, but not a lot of space.

In mid-2016 rooms were looking new and in good condition, so let’s hope they’re maintained. The on-site restaurant takes in terrific views too, and serves an included buffet breakfast for two, with extra guests 15 ringgit. This is the only hotel in these parts with the offer. Free WiFi is part of the package. Puncak Borneo Resort is only slightly more expensive on weekdays than others in the area, but weekends offers a great deal, especially considering the included breakfast and those magnificent views. If you would prefer to stay closer to the park entrance, J Residence is almost opposite.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
