Best business hotel in town

More on Kinabalu Park

The smartest business hotel in town is MK Hotel by a wide margin.

Travelfish says:

Located in the back corner of a quiet-ish lane above Mama Kopitiam (where the MK name comes from), MK Hotel’s difference from its competitors is noticeable as soon as you walk in the door — it’s clean, bright and stylish.

Artwork adorns the freshly painted mossy green walls of the narrow corridor leading to the rooms and to a furnished communal balcony above the coffee shop. The green tones continue into the simple, but clean modern-styled air-con rooms, and wall decals with inspirational quotes and an assortment of illustrations give the rooms a quirky touch. We’re not sure though that the quote, “As a purely mathematical fact, people who sleep less live more,” is a warning that the room is noisy or purely to offer solace to insomniacs. However, beds are comfortable enough to offer the promised sleep, and if that evades, a small flatscreen TV will keep you entertained. A small built-in desk and chair and tea-making facilities are the only accoutrements of the rather basic room. Although the rooms have windows, they are half hidden behind a panel leading to the bathrooms, creating a sort of anti-room with hanging space and storage for luggage. This make rooms a little dark, but also reduces street noise, however room lighting is very good. The adjoining basic tiled hot-water bathrooms are wet style, and spotless.

Rooms are non-smoking, and smelly fruit, salesmen, pets and weapons are also banned. Staff are fresh and friendly too. WiFi is included, breakfast is not, but a Western breakfast is available form the coffee shop below. MK Hotel is a little hard to find — the building backs onto the Petron petrol station on the main highway and fronts Larong Kibarambang. A small sign marks the entrance above Mama Kopitiam. MK Hotel is one of the higher-priced hotels in Ranau, but if your budget stretches to this flashpacker option, it’s one of the best value. If MK Hotel is full, Lodge 37 on the main road is a good alternative, but check that the room has a window first.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
