Best value dorm in town
Don’t let the name fool you, this is no stately country club, but it is Ranau’s best budget sleep, offering a range of bare-bones options from dorms to private rooms with both share or private bathrooms.
For single travellers the air-con dorms are a great deal, as it’s likely during the week you’ll have it mostly to yourself. Solid wooden bunks offer a comfortable sleep in the spotless tiled room. A bottom sheet and blanket are provided, but you may wish to bring a sleep sheet. Share bathrooms are very clean and you can choose between a Western or squat toilet, both with hot-water showers overhead, or a separate, slightly more spacious shower room.
If travelling with a friend, you can’t beat the fan-cooled twin bunk room or fan-cooled queen room for price; they’re cheaper than the dorm for two people, however you’ll still have to share a bathroom. For a little more ringgit, single, twin and double rooms add more space, an extra top sheet, a private bathroom, air-con and a TV with satellite channels.
All rooms including dorms are bright and airy and everything shined and smelt pleasant in this non-smoking hotel. A small communal area provides a couple of hard chairs and a hot and cold water dispenser with some instant coffee and tea bags. WiFi is free and fast. Breakfast is not included, but there is a multitude of options nearby. The friendly staff speak excellent English too.
Ranau Country Lodge is located on the second floor in a block at the back of the town centre. Once you spot the sign, you may need to walk around the corner to find the small street entrance. Alternative, albeit costlier dorms can be found about one and a half kilometres south of the town centre in The Second Room at Kiaburi Plaza shopping complex.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
