Quirky central hotel
True to its name, and unlike most in Kota Belud, friendly Times Traveller Lodge has more of a traveller’s atmosphere than a business hotel.
They were in the middle of renovations when we visited in July 2016, and they were looking pretty good albeit with some quirky touches.
Sitting above their excellent Times Kitchen restaurant, the smallish air-con rooms are consumed by big beds, and not much else. One room we viewed provided a cafe-style table and chair and tiny desk, but in others it was just beds. A mini-flatscreen TV and free WiFI provide entertainment. Interiors are clean and fresh and the small street-facing windows let in plenty of light. The dominating feature is a large aquarium decal applied over the frosted glass cubicle hiding a tiny bathroom, giving the space a dentist’s waiting room ambience. Odd, but cheery. Hot-water showers are not quite over the toilet, but almost.
Rooms are non-smoking, but for smokers the large open and airy lobby furnished with garden-style wooden benches and fake potted flowers is a smoking zone. Breakfast is not included, but available from the restaurant below after 08:30, and prior to that there are plenty of nearby local cafes. Staff are friendly and speak good English. Times Traveller Lodge is just below the main mosque, a three-minute walk to the bus station.
