For an island escape on a (sort of) budget, Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge offer basic accommodation in dorms at Sayang Sayang Hostel or simple chalets with share or private bathrooms.

Unlike just about everywhere else on Mantanani Island, here you don’t have to buy an all-inclusive package, and you are able to be a bit more flexible with what you choose to eat and do.

A handful of simple stilted wood and thatch “sulaps” ring the sandy beach and offer clean, no-frills rooms with just a bed and standard fan. Up the price and add an ensuite and a sea view, but still no frills. Pack a sleep sheet or sarong as only a bottom sheet and blanket are provided. Power is available at night between 18:00 and 06:00—you’ll know when morning hits as the rooms become very warm, so escape to the shady space below to enjoy the sea breeze. Common bathroom blocks sit behind the chalets, and showers are hot when the generator’s running. Down the beach a little, simple four and six-bed dorms are housed in a single-storey longhouse block set back from the shore. When possible, the dorms are divided by gender and nationality. Beds are singles not bunks and the rooms are clean, bright and airy. Leave your valuables elsewhere or bring a lock for your bag as lockers are not available. Clean share bathrooms are plentiful.

The open-air sandy floored restaurant is your only choice for food on the island, unless you bring some instant noodles. Other accommodation offers all-inclusive buffets, and there are no restaurants unfortunately, as the food at Mari Mari is not great and the restaurant service is surly. However, it’s an excellent spot to idle away a few hours or indulge in a sundowner or two with fellow travellers. The friendly staff at the on-site dive shop can sort you out for additional snorkelling and diving, and offer dive courses and a small shop sells sundries, cold drinks and beer.

The basic package at Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge includes the return boat trip from Kuala Abai near Kota Belud (you’ll need this, as it’s too far to swim), a night’s accommodation, breakfast and one snorkelling trip. Extra nights are priced such that it’s worthwhile booking at least one more. Additional snorkelling (45 ringgit) and diving can be arranged when you arrive. WiFi is charged at 15 ringgit per device per day and is excruciatingly slow. Better accommodation can be found on Mantanani Island, but it’s only available in all-inclusive packages, and mostly targeted at the Chinese market; if you speak and read Chinese, some deals are not bad. Rasa Sayang is one of the better ones.
