Touch Borneo Resort had not opened in mid-2016 when we visited, but the owners saw us poking around and took us on a tour. The resort, which opened in September, aims to be the fanciest digs on the island and the completed bungalows we saw were leaps and bounds ahead of anything else on offer.

Taking up the entire peninsula at the eastern end of Mantanani, wooden bungalows sit facing the ocean on either side of the narrow headland. Light-filled and spacious, the interiors have high beamed ceilings and dark polished wood floors and are equipped with both air-con and ceiling fans—the resort will have power around the clock.

Decked out with mosquito-netted beds and comfortable rattan furniture, the tropical island style invites you to open the glass doors and let the in sea breeze. Generously sized tiled bathrooms offer hot showers and are simply but classily styled. Furnished balconies are the perfect spot for a bit of ocean gazing.

Under the shade of casuarina trees, the resort’s open-style restaurant and double-storey bar are fitted with recycled wood, salvaged from boats and offer a corner to unwind after a hard day's snorkelling, diving or lazing about. If that’s not enough, perhaps the spa will help edge you into a relaxed state. The resort doesn’t have a swimming pool, but as the owners said, there’s a big blue one surrounding the island.

Chill-out bungalows.

Mantanani Island is certainly a pretty location to spend a night or two, and Touch Borneo give you the opportunity to do it in a bit of luxury—with prices to match.
