Business hotel at flashpacker prices
Hii-5 Hotel is a budget city business hotel in the heart of Kampung Air, close to some great seafood restaurants and minutes away from the city centre.
Renovations were ongoing when we visited in March 2016, and the rooms we saw were new and clean.
Hii-5 Hotel offers a range of air-con rooms, most with windows that open, but some without. If you are a solo traveller the single room is good value at 70 ringgit. The foyer has a mix of multicoloured, differently shaped armchairs and hanging terrariums in light bulb-shaped glass, which gives a fun touch. Staff are friendly, but word is that they don’t have a lot of travel information — you’ll probably be best to visit Sabah Tourism in nearby Gaya Street if you stay here.
Rooms are not as colourful as the foyer. They are painted cool grey and white with white tiles and white bedding. The only hint of decoration is the grey patterned bed runners, but we might not have seen the completed renovation and more may be to come. Furniture is minimal: just a built-in bench that runs the length of the room and provides lots of flat surface for storing things. Tea-making facilities and a flat screen TV are provided, but there is only one English channel. Free WiFi is available, but doesn’t reach most rooms. Bathrooms are clean but basic with a hot-water shower. The one we saw had city views (with a curtain for privacy).
No breakfast is provided but you can just walk out the door for that. Smoking is permitted in rooms, which may be a good reason not to choose a windowless one. This is a good flashpacker choice, and although out of the main tourist area on Gaya Street, it’s an excellent location. Bookings are recommended as Hii-5 Hotel can get busy. If there are no window rooms available, nearby Hotel Sri Iskandar may be an option.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
