Shiny and new, business-style Karikit Hotel opened in June 2016 and seems out of place in sleepy Banggi Island.

The imposing brick and glass hotel above a row of (yet to be opened) shops sits opposite the ferry port.

Rooms face the sea or the hill, and as there’s no difference in price, it’s a no-brainer. Smart modern-styled tiled rooms are spacious and clean. Dark olive feature walls contrast with pale tones and dark furnishings, looking fresh and contemporary. Beds are comfortable, but sheets are oddly thin and seem highly flammable (we don’t think there’s much cotton content).

Amenities include tea-making facilities and a flatscreen TV, but neither the TV nor WiFi were working when we stayed. Hot-water ensuite bathrooms are modern and clean. We loved watching all the comings and goings at the port from the small furnished balcony overlooking the street, however the attached air-con condenser was noisy and unpleasant. Staff are wonderfully helpful, and organised a last-minute tour and offered advice on local food and activities. The hotel plans to open more facilities, but for now there’s no restaurant, and not much around — you’ll have to eat early, or bring your own food. If you plan to overnight it in Banggi, head straight to Karikit Hotel—or bring a tent.
