Old, basic and slightly rundown Sri Maliangin Homestead is nothing if not atmospheric, being set amid a stilted water village over the sea, north of the ferry port.

Bright painted rooms lead from a pier connected by small bridges.

The modest rooms are clean but bare-boned and not great value, but given the limited options on Banggi, they are comfortable enough and the sound of the sea lapping beneath will lull you to sleep. A rainbow of colours, with candy-pink walls and blue and purple lino floors, the fan-cooled or air-con rooms provide narrow beds with a bottom sheet (almost too narrow for the bed) and a blanket. Air-con rooms add an old box-style TV. Bathrooms are cold-water only with squat toilet and bucket mandi in the fan room, and a Western throne and “shower” (it’s a pipe) in the air-con rooms. Bathrooms are cleanish, but broken tiles and stained walls don’t leave a good impression.

The jetty leads to a small restaurant that occupies a pretty spot at the end of the pier, but it was closed when we visited. We had trouble finding any staff, but had not prebooked, so weren’t expected. As dishevelled as Sri Maliangin Homestead is, it’s the best of the few budget options on Banggi—it has a local charm and is fine for a night. If you can stretch the pursestrings a bit, Karakit Hotel lacks kampung appeal, but is much better value.
