It’s clean and pleasant enough, but uninspiring. The bold terracotta and butter cube towers it over the Chinese temple nearby and looks promising from the exterior, and the cafe below is ace, we were just expecting a little more pizzazz.

Once our presumptions were shelved, we took for what it is: the best hotel in Kudat. Spacious and spotless tiled air-con rooms offer all the comfort and amenities you’ll need. Decor is a bland mix of beige and chintz, non-offensive to most, and solid furnishings are complete with desk, wardrobes, luggage storage and seating. Beds are bouncy and linen is fresh. WiFi, TV and tea-making facilities are standard inclusions, and deluxe and suite rooms add a kitchenette with a fridge and sink, but no stove. From the small unfurnished balcony you can admire the views of the town, with better views from higher floors—request a sea view for lovely sunsets. Ensuite bathrooms are clean and shiny, but the glass stalls for the hot-water showers are a tad pokey in some. Roomier suites add tubs.

Staff are friendly and speak good English. Breakfast isn’t included, but is available in the cafe below. Ria Hotel is a solid midrange choice, but if you’d prefer a hotel with a pool, you’ll have to venture out of the centre of town to Kudat Golf and Marina Resort. For a comfortable budget alternative try Hotel Greenland. Ria Hotel is popular, so bookings are recommended.
