More on Sandakan

Either Hotel Seafront are getting in with the name before global warming causes the seas to rise, or there’s a lot of reclaimed land in Sandakan; Hotel Seafront isn’t actually at the sea front but it does offer good ocean views from a couple of rooms.

Travelfish says:

You’ll have to climb a few stairs for the prospect, as there are four floors and no lift. Rooms are basic and the outlook makes up for any lack of style or opulence. Carpeted air-con rooms are clean but a bit tatty and dated with bland beige and brown tones, however beds are comfy and an old box-style TV gives you something to look at instead of the view. The tiled hot-water bathrooms are very clean.

Deluxe rooms are the better offer at Hotel Seafront, and are surprisingly priced at the same rate as all but the single rooms, they are however up up up the stairs. WiFi is included, and a restaurant in the lobby offers simple breakfast for an additional charge. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Hotel Seafront is located on the western side of town, near Padang Sandakan, a five-minute walk to the seafront or 10 minutes to the centre of town. For a budget hotel, Hotel Seafront offers more than many of the hostels in town, but we didn’t get the impression you’d be meeting a lot of fellow travellers. Book a room with a view or go to May Fair Hotel.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
