S’Kan Styles

Colourful midrange in good location

More on Sandakan

Colourful and contemporary interiors at S’Kan Styles are bright and neat in this waterfront three-star offering.

Travelfish says:

Rooms are a tad smaller than you would expect, but if you go for a seaview room, you won’t notice — it’s worth paying a little more, as the town view is not pretty.

Laminate floors and the vibrant chartreuse and marmalade colour scheme seem cheap rather than sophisticated and may not age well, but beds are comfy and air-con rooms boast amenities that include flatscreen TVs, coffee-making facilities (instant coffee only), iron and ironing board, a safe and minibar. Frosted glass bathrooms are a little grimy at the edges, but otherwise clean and are equipped with hotwater rain showers.

Sketchy WiFi is included in the rate, as is a buffet breakfast, served in the seafront restaurant. S’Kan Styles excellent central location and friendly staff add to this being a solid midrange choice. The hotel was previously managed by the French Accor chain; hopefully a change in management doesn’t mean a deterioration of service. Compare rates at four-star Four Points by Sheraton next door, as they often offer competitive discounts and that would be the better value choice.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
