Modern, colourful and comfortable
If your sensibilities can’t cope with patterns (mis)matched with more colourful patterns, give 2 Inn 1 Boutique Hotel & Spa a wide berth, however for decent value and somewhat quirky boutique styling, it’s a solid flashpacker pick.
Tucked into a back area of shophouses about two kilometres west of the city centre, this double business offers what it promises: a smart and colourful boutique hotel and in the building next door, a large spa offering a variety of services. Modern and colourful themed rooms occupy the three-storey hotel with a lift. A glitzy kaleidoscope of patterned carpets and wallpapers adorns the hallways: bright swirls, dots and wiggles. It’s fun and colourful, but thankfully doesn’t continue into the air-con rooms. Although they are not without colour and pattern, it’s just a little more subtle. A little.
Choose from colour based themes including “Superior Nature Green”, “Executive Dark Kisses” or we particularly like “Premier Blue Serenity”. Some rooms are cramped, but up the price range and they become more generous. Bed linen matches the themes (in the serenity room it's white), and all rooms are equipped with flatscreen TVs, tea-making facilities, free WiFi and a safe. There’s no minibar though.
Large windows flood the rooms with light, but offer no outlook. Tiled bathrooms are decked out in very smart modern style and offer hot-water rain showers. We think everything was clean, and if not the patten and colour hides any potential dirt.
The included buffet breakfast is served at the spacious in-house graphite and charcoal-coloured themed restaurant. Staff are charming and helpful. The spa next door offers everything from Thai massage to reflexology starting at 33 ringgit.
2 Inn 1 Boutique Hotel & Spa is in a bit of an odd backstreet location, but close enough to walk into town or catch a nearby bus (one ringgit) during the day. Get a cab at night (15 ringgit), as it’s not the nicest area to walk around in after dark. If you like to mix it with the locals, a bowling alley and cinema are nearby. Business was very quiet when we visited (possibly due to the location) and they offered very generous discounted walk-in rate, which made it a bargain deal.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
