Nature with creature comforts
If your budget ventures into the top range, Sepilok Nature Resort should be your first choice in Sepilok.
Backing onto Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, a picturesque lake ringed by established tropical gardens conceals comfortable traditional-style wooden chalets. Relax in a hammock on your private balcony and, as promised, you will be surrounded by nature. Orangutans from the sanctuary have no regard for the fence-line and are sometimes seen around the resort — have your binoculars and cameras ready.
Spacious and airy rooms offer both air-con and ceiling fans. The wooden interiors are comfortably furnished with traditional touches and modern amenities including TVs, WiFi, minibar and kettles. Ensuite bathrooms are clean and generous with double sinks and views to the jungle. A patchwork of patterned tiles adds modern flair.
A network of wooden walkways and bridges, edged by jungle vines and spectacular orchids, connects the chalets with the lakeside open double-storey restaurant and private guests’ lounge.
Upstairs relax in the tropical splendour in voluminous rattan armchairs or a swinging pod—choose a book from the library, play a game from the collection or simply sip a G&T and enjoy the sounds of the jungle.
The Lake Bistro & Bar is one of the better dining options in Sepilok, and worth a visit whether you’re staying or not. In the evening the restaurant is romantically lit, andreflected in the lake and surrounded by the forest the effect is rather magical. The menu spans Asia and the West and happy hour in the bar lasts from 14:30 -18:00, a good couple of hours longer than one.
Sepilok Nature Resort is staffed by keen nature lovers; the guy who showed us around knew the scientific name for many of the plants and pointed out hidden critters and birds. Guided night walks are offered, as are river cruises.
The resort is well maintained, but it does lack a swimming pool—we don’t recommend jumping in the lake as there are resident monitor lizards, however you can pay to use the pool at Sepilok Jungle Resort nearby. We loved the relaxing back to nature feel, sweetened with a few creature comforts. This is a great location too for exploring all Sepilok has to offer: It’s right at your doorstep. Recommended.
