Sepilok Forest Edge Resort (Labuk B & B)

Dorms, chalets and good food

More on Sandakan

Tucked away and, yes, skirting the forest edge, Sepilok Forest Edge Resort sits about a kilometre along a side road leading from Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Amid expansive lawns and gardens peppered with wildlife-attracting fruit trees, the resort has a bit of a split personality: A longhouse-style wooden building hosts an excellent hostel, Labuk B&B, and the rest of the resort is dotted with somewhat pricey bungalows.

Travelfish says:

The excellent restaurant, The Nest, offers the most interesting menu in Sepilok, or in fact in the whole Sandakan area. A laughably tiny pool that's more like a bird bath—it’s fewer than 80 centimetres deep—graces the grounds near the restaurant.

Dorms, although a little pricey, offer great value. The older building, renovated and looking well maintained, has beds in eight- or four-configurations in each dorm. Beds are very solid, each with a built-in laptop desk with power outlets that folds and locks to become a security locker where you can charge your devices safely. Sturdy built-in ladders and safety rails help folks on the top bunk, plus individual lighting and quality bedding (bottom sheet only) is provided for all. Most dorms have ensuite hot-water bathrooms, and the communal bathrooms are clean. A wide furnished terrace is a superb hangout to mingle or simply enjoy the jungle locale.

We were only able to view one of the bungalows and it had “yet to be renovated”. The room was comfortable enough, but in the current state, we thought it overpriced and unless you can get a really good deal, the chalets at Sepilok Nature Resort are better value. However, the air-con wooden bungalows have an appealing outlook, with small furnished balconies overlooking the jungle, and the bathroom styling with polished cement and bamboo is rustic and interesting. The newer bungalows offer an outdoor bathroom, with a cowboy-style bucket rigged up for a modern take on the bucket shower (we could see that over the wall).

Free WiFi is available, but doesn’t reach the rooms. Breakfast is included in the rates. The open-air restaurant not only serves good food—try the Sabahan specialities—but is an excellent place to relax and watch the birdlife in the surrounding trees or play congkak, a traditional Malay game. On the edge of the garden, the mini-pool is refreshing for a post-jungle splash (it’s too small to do laps, or even swim) or pull up one of the pod-shaped lounges for a bit of sun. Sepilok Forest Edge Resort is a good value budget choice, as for the price of a dorm you get to share the same facilities as the pricier rooms. We noticed the bungalows on some booking sites offered for a 30 percent discount, which is a more reasonable offer, so shop around.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
