Dominating the seafront at Semporna, multi-storey Pacific Inn’s modern-style rooms are second to none in town. Opened in June 2016, it was spic and span when we visited in August.
Snazzy air-con rooms enjoy bright and airy interiors. Contemporary decor leans toward glitz, but keeps it restrained with a palette of pale grey and silver. Ash wood panels are complemented with silver patterned wallpapers and pale tiled floors. Dark drapes, valances and bed runners introduce an extra dimension and a touch of elegance. Plump mattresses with crisp white linen complete the look.
A flatscreen TV and free WiFi will keep you entertained, and there’s a small safe but rooms are lacking a minibar, which we’d expect at this price point, however you can make yourself a cuppa.
Small ensuite bathrooms darken the tones and are decked out with glass-screened hot-water rain and hand-held showers. Ample bench space provides room for your bit and pieces, and you won’t have to pack your hairdryer. Towels are fluffy and white with racks and hooks to hang them.
Sea-view rooms enjoy a small furnished balcony with views over the port and water village nearby. Standard rooms are sans outdoor space, but windows open and a natty folding drying rack outside gives you a place to hang your wet swimmers.
Obviously the pick are the pricier sea-view rooms, not only for the view, as the town-view standard rooms are tiny and cramped. On the lower level of the hotel a large empty glass-enclosed vestibule will be a future seafront restaurant.
Friendly staff seemed efficient and professional. As with everywhere in Semporna, this place is busy and bookings are advised. If you can’t get a room try Pacific Inn’s little brother, Ocean Inn, or for more staid decor, Seafest Hotel offer a range of tired middle-of-the-road rooms but is the only hotel in town with a swimming pool.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
