Smart compact rooms
A new addition in 2014, the Adonis Hotel offers smart midrange fare on equally smart Purvis Street in Singapore’s Bugis district. Rooms are compact, but exceptionally well kept and bright, making this a good option for travellers looking for a bit more comfort without spending the earth.
From the streetside, Adonis looks more like a restaurant than a hotel and the street frontage is given over to a combined restaurant and lobby area. The reception is immediately inside and a little cramped if you’ve got more than a couple of bags and other guests are coming or going. Nevertheless it’s clean and the staff friendly and chatty. This restaurant area is where the complimentary light breakfast is served and also a free cocktail hour in the late afternoon.
Rooms are in the larger modern section behind and above the street frontage. We opted for the smallest (and cheapest) room available — a “Quaint Queen”, which was on the fifth floor. The room was bright and airy (thanks to the large window) but the view was just across the street to another tower. Facilities include a stocked complimentary minibar (Spanish beer not spirits), Nespresso (bad for the environment, let’s note), flat screen TV, a host of bathroom accessories and other typical fittings. The hotel has free hi-speed WiFi throughout and you’ll be supplied with login details when you check in. We did stick our head into a larger room that was being cleaned and if you can go the extra money for a bigger room, that would be money well spent.
The bed was semi-firm with good linen, but with our six-foot height it was only barely long enough, but as we were travelling alone, this wasn’t really an issue. If you’re anything like over 6’2?, however, you’ll find the beds here a little uncomfortable. The room was very quiet and we had a very solid night of sleep.
The location is excellent. Purvis Street has a top selection of midrange to quite fancy restaurants along with a kopitiam across the road and a smattering of Chinese and Thai restaurants, so you’ll certainly not go hungry here. It’s also about a 10-minute walk to Bugis SMRT. Rates are, for Singapore, a good deal. This is definitely more than we would normally pay, but we felt like a splurge for a night and we were pretty satisfied and would have stayed for a second night had the room been available. Shop online for a rate marginally lower than the hotel’s own site. Reservations in advance are a very good idea.
Overall this is a fair deal for Singapore. Rooms are compact but well kept and staff are both welcoming and helpful. Online reviews are resoundingly positive.
