Good value, great location
With a terrific location, comfortable beds and lower-than-expected rates, BB House might just live up to a name that stands for “Best Bed”. There are however some disadvantages to consider before you steer your way here.
Overshadowed by the larger and less inspiring Happio Hotel, which covers part of the same building, BB House blends into the bustling corner of Soi Chana Songkhram and Phra Arthit Road. The small lobby includes a few shared computers where you can chat with Mum in the comfort of air-con. In rooms and common areas, floral wallpaper joins framed pictures of butterflies, Thai kids and the Eiffel Tower, for example, to lend the place a quirky feel.
Expect notably tight quarters in standard rooms equipped with firm but comfortable double beds, tables and small TVs atop bureaus. Clean ensuite wet bathrooms with hot water are also very cramped—larger individuals will want to look elsewhere. Every room that we saw had at least one window; we were told that others are windowless but there’s no price break for those. Despite the lack of space, the value is not shabby given the location and amenities.
Also accessed by narrow stairways, larger deluxe rooms open to an inviting shared terrace with a few tables, benches, a little swing and some greenery atop the fourth floor. Though you don’t quite catch a river view due to the taller buildings across Phra Arthit, it’s a fine spot to have a beer or play some cards as the sun sinks over the rooftops. If you can swing the extra expense (and stairs), we highly suggest the “terrace deluxe” rooms situated up here.
The easy-to-find location puts a string of artsy bars and quality eateries at your fingertips on Phra Arthit Road. Khao San proper is a 10-minute stroll away along Soi Rambuttri, and a river ferry pier is found just across the road. While most rooms stay reasonably quiet for such a central location, noise from the lobby could be audible if you get stuck in the one ground-floor room.
Probably the biggest drawback with BB are staffers who, while friendly, speak very little English and are not equipped to help travellers explore the city or advise on onward transport. Opt for Lamphu House or Honey Place if you’ll need some assistance.
BB House also runs a second property, BB House 2, which is essentially an extension of the original property set at the far end of Soi Rambuttri. Be careful not to mix up these places with another, unrelated hotel also called BB House (that one stands for “Best Bangkok”) out in the Pratunam area.
