One of Bangkok’s most exclusive boutique hotels, Chakrabongse Villas is spread over a lush garden between Wat Pho and the Chao Phraya River, in the heart of the historic district. Built in 1908, the central structure is a gorgeous piece of heritage architecture that originally served as a prince’s palace. Topped by a teakwood tower, it remains one of the riverside’s most photogenic buildings.

Seven boutique rooms are individually designed and equipped with all of the mod-cons you would expect from a five-star property. They vary sharply in design and include rooms done in a rather inexplicable (but tastefully done) Moroccan theme, a traditional Chinese style that would befit a Tang dynasty ambassador, and a classic Thai design in a gorgeous standalone teakwood house. The “garden room” that we were shown seemed to be the worst of the bunch — perfectly comfortable but dark and with no real view.

The resort-like property includes a small but lovely swimming pool to go with a renowned restaurant serving royal Thai cuisine on a riverside terrace truly fit for royalty. Staff can arrange boat trips from the hotel’s own pier, massages at the nearby Wat Pho School and bicycles for exploring the area. Don’t be surprised if a hi-so Thai couple have booked the place out for a wedding.

Our only complaint is the way we were treated when inquiring about a room for our mother who is visiting in a few months. Despite being reasonably well-dressed (we didn’t look like grungy backpackers), a very rude security guard at first did not even let us approach the property, barking “You have to booking!” while shooing us away.

When we asked for information on the hotel, the guard pointed us to a neighbouring coffee shop where the worker stared at us confusingly when we asked about the villas (the cafe isn’t even associated with the hotel). After finally being allowed on the property, the person who showed us a room was polite but really not very welcoming. Next time, we’ll put on some Prada and see if that helps.
