A new location for the longstanding and popular Queen’s Garden near Suvarnabhumi airport, the Great Residence has the same owners, a similar set-up and many of the same friendly staff, but a new name. (The old Queen’s Garden is, at time of writing, undergoing a makeover.)
Their new location is closer to the airport than before, being right next to the airport bus station, which is five kilometres or a 10-minute drive from the terminus building. We’re guessing the new hotel is actually converted condos, consisting of three small four-storey blocks with a tacked-on restaurant and a welcome swimming pool area.
Rooms have been agreeably done up and come with cable TV, minibar, free WiFi, en suite bathrooms and small balconies; they’re available in deluxe or standard formats — each have similar decor and facilities but the deluxe rooms are larger.
The restaurant serves Thai food with a few basic Western options — it’s a bit on the over-priced side and the Western dishes in particular aren’t brilliant but it is very convenient and opens until midnight for those arriving peckish on late flights. It opens at 06:00 and your room comes with breakfast included.
They have a full bar and some good deal happy hour cocktails and there’s a pleasant outdoor, canal-side sitting area. If you exit the car-park and turn left though, you’ll find some cheaper local eateries a short walk along the main street.
In addition Great Residence has its own massage parlour so you can de-stress after a long flight, exchange facilities and ticketing and tour services, though of course their primary facility is the 24-hour airport pick-up and transfer service, which is included in the price of your room.
Simply indicate your flight details when booking and upon arrival exit by gate or door 4 on the arrivals level. You’ll see the pick up spot for minibuses arriving from various hotels, including Great Residence. They do claim to have reps on 24-hour standby at the airport but if you don’t immediately see either rep or minibus, it’s just a case of waiting at the pick-up point until a bus marked Great Residence comes along.
In the other direction you simply indicate your flight when you check-in and staff will suggest which minibus you should take to the airport. They generally leave on the hour, every hour.
The service is particularly useful if you have an early departure, late arrival or overnight stop between flight connections. All things considered, prices are a very good deal, too.
