More on Kanchanaburi

Offering a range of budget rooms including some of the better cheap rafthouse options in town, the long-running VN Guesthouse continues to stand out among the riverside options on low-key Rongheabaoy Road.

Travelfish says:

Sporting woven bamboo walls, cheap linens on firm beds, clothes-drying racks, choice of wall-mounted fan or air-con and cramped hot-water bathrooms, the raft rooms all have furnished porches but you only get a river view if going for a pricier edition—cheaper raft rooms face inland to the rest of the property and lack privacy. Note that the river-view raft room at the southern corner has a porch within a few metres of rooms at neighbouring Tara Rafthouse.

If you don’t require a floating room, we suggest hunting for a river-view concrete room at one of the corners, preferably the side closest to the restaurant. These also have chairs on the porches and go for the same price as those at the centre of the building, but with less-obstructed views. All of the land rooms also come with choice of fan or air-con and, while not awfully dirty, are dark and can be musty. In our opinion, spending an extra 25 baht on a room closer to the river, rather than the “garden” building further back, is a no brainer.

Guests arrive at a reception nook connected to a restaurant perched high above the river and affording a tremendous view—one of the best in town—over to an undeveloped pastoral area on the opposite bank. Staff are not notably friendly but also not rude in our experience. WiFi is free in the restaurant, which we’ve heard serves decent food.

VN is a popular spot and it’s easy enough to meet other travellers while sitting on your porch or on a floor cushion in the restaurant. Excepting the occasional ranting backpacker, the location is quiet and centrally located to the rest of the city. Neighbouring Tara Rafthouse has better-equipped raft rooms starting at 900 baht, while nearby Rainbow Lodge offers crusty but colourful concrete bungalows for dirt cheap.
