Guests arrive to sprawling gardens, passing an elegant rotunda on the way to a lobby that could pass as a ballroom used by a late 19th-century aristocratic society. Designers achieved the colonial-period design with such grace and subtlety that you could be forgiven for thinking the resort was actually built around the turn of the century. In a word, it’s impressive.

Set in a number of long three-storey buildings with broad crimson roofs surrounding the pool and gardens, all rooms come with glossy hardwood floors, silk touches, hand-carved eaves, antiques and all of the comforts you'd expect at a five-star resort. Tubs come standard in spacious bathrooms and every room has a private balcony. The cheapest superiors have 52 square metres of space. If that’s not enough, take over your own private wing in the presidential suite.

The huge saltwater swimming pool and kids’ pool rimmed by lounge chairs grabs most of the attention, but you’ll also find a full-service spa and fitness centre. Five dining options include a wine bar, a Western fine-dining restaurant and the “rice barge” serving Thai cuisine in a floating pavilion. Every staffer we encountered—even the security guards—were very polite and a manager who spoke perfect English joined the receptionist to answer our questions.

Located a few kilometres west of town, the resort is best suited to travellers with vehicles but staff can arrange transport if you need it. The resort draws quite a few high-end tour groups and is a favourite wedding venue for hi-so Thais, so don’t be surprised to find well-dressed folks mingling on weekends. If you find Dheva Mantra too expensive or hoity-toity but like the idea of an upscale resort near town, check out the nearby Felix Resort or U Inchantree instead.

Discounts for Dheva Mantra can often be scored on booking sites and good-value packages are often available via the resort’s own site.
