Central and comfy
Opened in 2012, Good Times led a charge of new flashpacker-range properties to offer an alternative to the cheap guesthouses and ageing city hotels. Some will find it too commercialised but it’s hard to argue with a central riverfront location and quality rooms starting at just over 1,000 baht.
Situated on a large property overlooking the river and a lagoon loaded with goldfish, the location and setting are big selling points. The cheapest rooms are cramped so we’d pay an extra 250 baht for one of the larger standard rooms that, while lacking natural light, are steps away from a small swimming pool rimmed by palms. These are spacious, clean and equipped with TVs, WiFi, fridges, safes, large wet bathrooms, decent beds and even some slippers. Trendy art and hardwood trim punctuates the minimalist look.
In total the resort offers eight different room types, including several with multiple beds and the option of connecting rooms, making this a strong choice for families. Reaching up to 45 square metres, the priciest rooms come with living areas, river views seen through floor-to-ceiling windows and porches beside the lagoon. A restaurant and bar serving fresh coffee, cocktails and Thai food occupies most of the riverfront land.
Also running a large tour company and cooking school, Good Times has become a major force in the Kanchanaburi tourism scene. This means that you don’t get the personable charm found at some of the smaller places to stay. Staffers weren’t very friendly but they had no problem showing us a couple of rooms.
While we still like this resort-style setup more than the big hotels that have arrived in recent years, the nearby Bridge Residence also has a pool to go with great views from upper-floor rooms that fetch similar rates as Good Times. There’s also the River Kwai Bridge Resort located further north, which has a larger pool but also staffers who were not helpful when we last stopped by.
