Large-scale lakeside spot
Set at the far end of Si Suwan Khiri Road right on the lake, Phonpailin is a big and long-running resort that seems to cater mostly to Thai holiday-makers.
Entering the lobby you’ll first see several large fish tanks and then the massive open-air restaurant with great views over the lake. The resort has two main accommodation options: massive rooms with verandas underneath the restaurant and a set of bungalows running out to the south of the restaurant. The bungalows are quite well designed, with spectacular views and lots of glass, giving them a light and airy atmosphere, although they do feel a bit lived in. The rooms underneath the restaurant are oddly the more expensive -- we’d suggest the bungalows to be better value. A handful of larger suite rooms and family cabins are also available. The atmosphere at Phonpailin can feel a little starched and formal, so while it’s comfortable, it might not be the most relaxing spot. The staff are cheery, though English can be a bit of a challenge. The restaurant here gets very good reports and the resort offers free WiFi.
