The easy-to-find Diamond Phe Hotel should do the trick if you’re after a dirt-cheap private room that might even bag you a sea view.
We wouldn't quite call it a “diamond in the rough,” but for the price it's a smidge better than you might expect.
Rooms show some wear and are totally lacking character, with ancient furnishings and threadbare linens on firm beds. Even so, all rooms come with TVs, hot water and windows, and sea views from the upper floors are an added bonus. Tall travellers will want to watch their heads in some tight pinches in the halls and stairways. On several visits the receptionists have been more cheerful than many that we're encountered at similar budget hotels in Thailand. Free WiFi is available and the staff is happy to clean rooms daily.
The drab ground-floor restaurant area had been replaced by a makeshift shop selling plastic hangers and stuffed toys when we last passed through, though a few of the old booths were left behind. Expect a frozen 1970s look throughout the hotel, especially in the lobby. The main-drag location is very close to Chokkrisda Pier and a 10-minute walk west of Nuan Thip Pier.
